Ian M. Zeller, Ph.D., P.E., ACTAR

Senior Biomechanical Engineer

Ian M. Zeller, Ph.D., P.E., ACTAR, is a highly accomplished engineer with over 15 years of experience in materials science, biomechanics, and computational dynamics. He has investigated more than 1,000 cases, including motor vehicle accidents, recreational incidents, medical device designs, slip-and-fall accidents, and product liability cases throughout the United States. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states and is accredited as a traffic accident reconstructionist.

Dr. Zeller has graduate-level expertise in computational dynamics and orthopedic biomechanics. His areas of focus include dynamics, vibrations, joint contact mechanics, and muscle control during both static and dynamic loading applications. His research includes clinical and computational analyses of the human body to inform the design and implantation of orthopedic devices for the knee, hip, and spine. He has published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Dr. Zeller’s findings have been presented at technical and surgical conferences across North America, Europe, and Asia.

With an extensive background in biomechanics, Dr. Zeller specializes in developing, validating, and applying mechanical models of the human body. These models use statistical modeling and prediction techniques, combined with motion capture data from live human subjects, and are customized to specific anatomical and physiological parameters. They can simulate and predict joint mechanics in healthy, diseased, and surgically repaired knees in living subjects across diverse demographic groups, leading to more targeted intervention strategies.

Collaboration with Surgeons and Education Initiatives

Dr. Zeller has collaborated with surgeons nationwide to design and clinically assess knee replacement devices, including personalized and prototype models that prioritize efficacy and safety. He actively teaches engineering principles to surgeons through seminars and at meetings of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Dr. Zeller remains active in research and stays informed about emerging trends and best practices in biomechanics and engineering. His journal publications cover various topics, including knee replacement design and forward-solution modeling, joint mechanics, personalized joint replacements, material structures and properties, and the biological modeling of disease distributions.

Extensive Courtroom Experience

In addition to his research and engineering work, Dr. Zeller has significant experience as a testifying engineer in court cases. He has been under oath over 210 times in depositions, trials, and arbitrations, establishing him as a trusted expert in his field.
