Walkway Meets Bump: Trip Hazard?

Each year, a large number of slip, trip and fall incidents occur in parking lots and adjacent walking surfaces that result in serious and, in some cases, fatal injuries. The truth is that slips, trips, and falls happen most frequently in our daily lives. According to statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the most common reason for hospital visits annually is unintentional falls.

Let’s take a look at one example of a trip and fall scenario:

Is it possible for the walking surface to vary in elevation if it occurs at the end of the sidewalk? In the photo illustration above, a sidewalk joins the adjacent parking lot at a gradual slope downward. But a “speed bump” is constructed at the end of the sidewalk. Because it is a feature of the change from one expected walking surface to another, this bump presents a trip hazard. The bump negates the advantages of the ramp, which were intended to provide a level and seamless transition between the sidewalk and the parking lot. Although the bump was painted to stand out, its overall design and purpose were unclear, and it did not seem required or necessary.
