It’s Time to Change: Safety Tips for the End of Daylight Saving

Today marks the end of daylight savings time in most parts of U.S. This means less sunlight and colder temperatures are on the way. Check out these safety tips for the fall time change:

  • Adjust your sleep schedule: Any disruption to your sleep cycle — even the seemingly minor one-hour change that marks the end of daylight saving time — can leave you at risk of being fatigued. To avoid exhaustion, gradually adjust your bedtime by going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night.
  • Replace batteries: Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It’s recommended to do this twice a year, in the fall and in the spring.
  • Check fire extinguishers: Check the gauge at the top of your fire extinguisher to see if it needs to be recharged or replaced.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists: Be extra aware of pedestrians and cyclists, especially at dawn and dusk when visibility is low. While drivers should watch for you, pedestrians also have responsibilities. Make yourself more visible by following these tips from CDOT:
    • Wear light-colored clothing and walk in well-lit areas, whenever possible. For additional protection, wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight.
    • Use intersections that have traffic lights and pedestrian signals. Follow the signals carefully.
    • Look “left-right-left” and over your shoulder before stepping off the curb.
    • To remain alert to potential danger, stow your phone away and keep your attention on the road.
    • Follow the law: Bicycles must have a front light and back reflector in low-light conditions.
  • Adjust outdoor lighting: Add lights to your porch or deck to reduce the risk of slips and falls at night.
  • Be prepared for unexpected cold weather: Be prepared for temperatures to drop at any time, especially if you’re going to be outside.
  • Change all season for winter tires: While many parts of the U.S. have already experienced the first snowfall by daylight savings time, the date is a good reminder to swap your all-seasons for snow tires. Snow tires improve traction and shorten braking distances. This makes winter driving safer for everyone. Accident due to Tire Failure? Reach out to our Tire Failure Expert
  • Be prepared for bright sunlight: Wear SPF and limit sun exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UVB rays are strongest. If you’re outside during this time, wear a hat and seek shade.

Earlier darkness can catch us off guard, but paying extra attention can ensure we head into this winter safely.
