National Passenger Safety Week

It’s National Passenger Safety Week, and at Qforensics, we know risk management begins with prevention. We’re dedicated to the safety of both drivers and passengers on the road, and that starts with empowering everyone in the vehicle to speak up.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the most recent data indicates, 24% of passenger-vehicle occupant fatalities were passengers.

Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals some alarming statistics: they estimate that 53% of children under 18 are passengers at the time of a crash. Even more startling is that 73% of fatalities among children under 13 involve being vehicle passengers. These numbers highlight the importance of passengers taking an active role in ensuring a safe travel environment.

Whether you’re traveling with a friend, coworker, or a new driver in the family, your voice matters! Passengers have a significant role in preventing accidents. If you notice anything that feels unsafe—like speeding, phone usage, or just plain distractions—don’t hesitate to speak up. National Passenger Safety Week urges us all to be brave enough to intervene. Remember, it’s not just your safety at stake; it’s also about protecting the driver and everyone else on the road.

So, what can you do as a responsible passenger?

  • If you’re with someone who is using their phone, even through Bluetooth, offer to be their designated texter or caller—making it clear that their full attention is needed on driving. If they insist on being distracted, politely let them know that you’d prefer to exit the vehicle.
  • If you see friends or family about to drive impaired by drugs or alcohol, step in and speak up! Arrange a safe ride home or help them find a place to stay while they sober up.
  • Help the driver navigate by reading directions and road signs, keeping them focused on the road ahead.
  • Don’t forget to buckle up, and don’t ride unless everyone is wearing their seatbelt. Also, make sure children and babies are properly restrained in age-appropriate car seats.
  • Sit back, stay calm, and be a good co-pilot without unnecessary distractions.
  • Talk to your teen about the responsibility of being a passenger. They have superpowers as passengers to keep themselves and their friends safe!

Together, let’s make every journey safer.
