Construction Zone Safety: Flags vs Stop/Slow Paddle

Construction zones are common across our U.S. highways and city streets. While these projects are necessary to improve infrastructure, they also create hazards for drivers, workers, and pedestrians. Essential construction zone safety measures include appropriate work zone signage and correct temporary traffic control devices. Proper signage and devices (that comply with the Model Uniform Traffic Code and ATSSA) assist drivers in identifying road hazards and making informed decisions about how to proceed safely.

Flaggers play a pivotal role in this process but face many challenges, including high-speed traffic, aggressive drivers, and poor visibility. Additionally, the activity of flagging can pose risks if performed incorrectly, such as a flagger having their back to approaching traffic, inadequate sight lines, or not wearing the proper high visibility apparel. Even the use of flags is incorrect, outside of emergency situations, according to sources like the MUTCD and ATSSA. All of which can lead to confusion, incorrect driver actions, and potential accidents.

So, what is the proper method? The first answer lies in using STOP/SLOW paddles. These paddles provide clear and direct guidance, making them the preferred tool for “flagger” traffic control. Trained flaggers effectively utilize these paddles to manage traffic flow, reserving flags for emergency situations only. By prioritizing the use of STOP/SLOW paddles over flags, we can greatly improve communication and safety in construction zones, creating a more secure environment for everyone involved! Additionally, ensuring the proper ANSI class of safety apparel is worn, based on the specific job requirements, can provide adequate visibility for the traveling public to see the flaggers and other workers.

Since construction zone accidents can involve so many potential causes, it is not always clear who bears responsibility. Additionally, because work zones are constantly changing, it’s critical to document what the road looked like at the time of the crash, not just after cleanup. Qforensics’ team of forensic engineers understands the various challenges these cases bring – from signage, lighting, layout, compliance with safety standards, and vehicle behavior – we can provide you with the facts you need to make informed decisions about your case.
