Why a Forensic Engineer Is Vital in High Profile Cases: Qforensics’ Senior Forensic Engineer, Brian Darr, Shares Insights on
Kyren Lacy Crash Investigation
October 20, 2025 – Earlier this month, Brian Darr, Senior Forensic Engineer with Qforensics was asked by FOX 8 WVUE-TV in New Orleans to comment on the 2024 automobile crash involving Kyren Lacy. Mr. Darr has not been retained by either side to investigate this particular accident case. He was asked by the reporter to talk in generalities about the critical process of accident investigations, forensic reconstruction, and why a forensic engineer is vital in high profile cases.
Mr. Darr brings over 25 years of engineering expertise, including more than 15 years dedicated to forensic engineering, with a specialization in accident reconstruction.
“Combining science and cutting-edge technology, independent forensic experts meticulously gather all available information related to the incident to piece together the “how” and “why” behind an accident,” shared Mr. Darr.
Although each incident can vary greatly, there are various types of key evidence that can be gathered by a forensic expert during a vehicle accident investigation, such as:
- Inspection of the accident site, including assessment of road design, signage, skid marks, gouges, lighting, or environmental factors
- Comprehensive inspections of vehicles involved
- Event Data Recorders (EDRs) and vehicle data to analyze pre- and post-crash information
- Photos and videos collected from witnesses, police body cameras, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, and police dash cameras
- Detailed statements from witnesses
- 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry and aerial drone footage of the accident scene
- Simulation software to create detailed 3D models and animations that visually depict the sequence of events
Mr. Darr, in the interview with FOX8, said, “While errors or incomplete data in crash reports are uncommon, they can occur.” This statement highlights the importance of hiring a forensic consultant who can conduct a thorough analysis, gather all relevant facts, and rigorously explore every possible scenario.
